The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
B-1 commits a common foul against A-1 while A-1 is dribbling the ball. A-1 and B-1 begin jawing at each other and a double technical foul is assessed for unsporting conduct. Team B now has 7 team fouls showing on the scoreboard. The coach of Team A claims that, because Team B now has 7 team fouls, A-1 should attempt bonus free throws. Is the coach correct?
The coach is NOT correct. Although Team B now has 7 team fouls, the common foul against A-1 was the 6th team foul of the half. The penalty is a throw-in from the spot nearest the foul. The double technical foul which created Team B’s 7th team foul is a point-of-interruption play. The point of interruption is the throw-in for Team A resulting from the common foul by B-1.
