The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-1 is in the backcourt. A-1 attempts to pass the ball to A-2 in the front court. B-2 who is in Team A’s front court, deflects the pass up into the air. The ball is headed out of bounds. B-2 tries to save the ball by deflecting it back inbounds. The ball hits A-2 in the front court and goes into the backcourt where it is recovered by A-1. Handle the situation.
This is a backcourt violation. Although the ball is loose, by rule the deflections by B-2 did not end team control by Team A. Team A had team control, the last to touch the ball in the A’s front court was A-2 and the first to touch the ball after it got backcourt status was A-1. (References: Rule 4-12-1, 4-12-3, 9-9-1)
