The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-1 drives to the basket to attempt a layup. The ball enters the basket from below and passes through the basket rising above the ring. B-5 jumps and touches the ball while it is within the imaginary cylinder above the ring.
Handle the situation.
1. Team A’s Band is playing during a live ball. Is this permissible. Yes-No
2. The score is Team A- 62 and Team B-61 when the horn sounds to end the 4th quarter. Prior to the referee’s approval of the score, the Head Coach of Team A directs obscene gestures to the officiating crew. The officiating crew should ignore the gestures. T-F
3. A1 is dribbling the ball in the frontcourt. A3 sets an illegal screen on B3. A3 is charged with a team control foul. T-F
4. A team must have team control in its frontcourt for a “3” second violation to be adjudicated. T-F
5. A1 is dribbling the ball in the front court, B1 knocks the ball away. If A3 is in the lane for “3” seconds, a “3” second violation cannot be adjudicated. T-F
1. After a successful free throw by A1, the officiating crew discover that A2 and A3 were occupying the first marked lane spaces. The officiating crew ignores the violation. T-F
2. A1 is shooting a free throw and A2 and A3 are occupying the first marked lane spaces. The Lead Official rules a free throw violation on Team A. T-F
3. The net shall be a white cord mesh net, 15 to 18 inches in length. T-F
4. If the ball passes over a rectangular backboard, the ball is considered out of bounds. T-F
5. If the alternating possession procedure has not been established, and another jump ball is required, the jump ball shall be between:
1. A ball which is in flight retains the same location/status as when it was last in contact with a player on the court. T-F
2. If a ball is handed to the thrower-in, the ball is at the thrower-in’s disposal.
3. The official scorebook is the home book, unless the referee rules otherwise. T-F
4. It is required that team members’ numbers be entered in numerical order in the score book. T-F
5. At least 10 minutes before the game, each team shall supply the official scorer with the name and number of the players and the designated starting “5”. T-F
1. AP possession to start a quarter shall be at either side of the division line. T-F
2. A team is in control during an interrupted dribble. T-F
3. After an intentional personal foul, the ball is taken out of bounds at the division line away from the scoring table. T-F
4. Jumper A1 taps the ball to the floor and recovers the ball. This is a legal play. T-F
5. Tinted glass backboards are prohibited. T-F
