The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-1 is awarded a free throw. As A-1 begins his motion, B-5, who is in a marked lane space, steps into the lane early. A-1 hesitates and then continues his motion. The free throw is unsuccessful and the ball misses the ring. What is the correct procedure?
Clearly A-1 was distracted by B-5’s early entry into the lane. As such, A-1 should be awarded a substitute free throw since the act of distracting overrules any miss of the ring by A-1. (References: Rule 9.1 Penalty 4c)

Paul, I had this situation in a game last night. A1 has the ball at the division line for a throw-in to start the second half. Immediately after he releases the ball B1 legally touches and deflects it out of bounds on the sideline very near the division line. What should the official do before administering the throw-in to team A? Should have the scorer reverse the alternating possession arrow since team A’s A/p throw-in ended when B1 deflected the ball out of bounds.
