Play of the Day 412 (2023-24)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-2 drives to the basket and is pushed from behind by B-2 while dribbling.  This causes A-2 to run over B-4 who has a legal guarding position in front of A-2.  Both the Lead and the Trail have whistles on this play.  The Lead signals a player control foul on A-2 since he did not see the push.  The Trail has not signaled a specific foul.

Handle the situation.

The Trail needs to have a conference with the Lead regarding the push from B-2.   Since the foul by B-2 occurred before the contact by A-2 with B-4, the ball was dead when the contact with B-4 occurred.  This should result in the Trail official ruling a pushing foul on B-2 with the appropriate penalties for the foul.  Since the contact by A-2 was not intentional or flagrant, this contact is ignored.

Very Interesting Play. That is why Officials need to communicate with each other in these situations.
    Thanks!
