The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-5 attempts to dunk the ball. The ball rattles the ring and pops up into the air outside the imaginary cylinder. A-5 grabs the ring to protect himself. A-5 sees the ball nearby, releases his right hand from the ring, grabs the ball and dunks it.
Handle the situation.
There is no technical foul for A-5 grabbing the ring to protect himself. However, when A-5 released one hand to grab the ball, A-5 is guilty of using the ring to gain an advantage. A technical foul should be ruled against A-5. Since the infraction occurred before the dunk was completed, no goal will be scored.
Team B will be awarded two free throws and will be awarded the ball at the division line opposite the table for a designated spot throw-in.
