Play of the Day #281 (2022-23)

The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

A-5 attempts to dunk the ball.  The ball rattles the ring and pops up into the air outside the imaginary cylinder.  A-5 grabs the ring to protect himself.  A-5 sees the ball nearby, releases his right hand from the ring, grabs the ball and dunks it.

Handle the situation.

There is no technical foul for A-5 grabbing the ring to protect himself.  However, when A-5 released one hand to grab the ball, A-5 is guilty of using the ring to gain an advantage.  A technical foul should be ruled against A-5.  Since the infraction occurred before the dunk was completed, no goal will be scored.

Team B will be awarded two free throws and will be awarded the ball at the division line opposite the table for a designated spot throw-in.
