The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
During a dead ball, A-1 and B-1 push each other. This is followed by B-2 coming in and pushing A-1.
Handle the situation.
A-1 and B-1 should be charged with a double technical foul for intentional contact during a dead ball. No free throws will be attempted and play resumes from the point of interruption. Since B-2 followed up with intentional contact as well, B-2 is charged with a technical foul also. Team A will be awarded two free throws and the ball for a designated spot throw-in from the division line opposite the table.
Please note that pushing is not fighting as defined in the rules. It is deserving of a technical foul for intentional contact during a dead ball. However, unless there is an attempt to strike involved, disqualification for a flagrant foul should not be part of the penalty.
