The play described below is provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.
A-1 drives to the basket in overtime, is fouled by B-1 and is awarded two free throws. It is B-1’s fifth foul. However, the scorer does not notify the officials. A-1 makes the 1st free throw and misses the 2nd free throw. The ball is rebounded by B-1 who dribbles the length of the court and is fouled while attempting a layup. The ball goes in the basket.
At this point the scorer notifies the officials that B-1 has 5 fouls. After conferring with each other, the officials rule that B-1’s goal does not count and disallow the foul. They return the ball to the other end of the court and award the ball to Team B nearest to where B-1 gained control of the rebound. Were the officials correct?
The officials were NOT correct. Although B-1 has 5 fouls, B-1 is a legal player until his coach is notified by the officials that he has been disqualified. Since B-1 is a legal player, all of his actions count. This includes points scored and additional fouls that may be committed.
The officials should have counted the goal and the foul. Since B-1 is now disqualified, B-1 must immediately be removed from the game and his substitute will attempt the free throw. Play should proceed from this free throw as after any normal free throw.

Are you kidding. Disallow basket & go back to B1’s rebound???? I thought all officials knew D/Q player does NOT take affect until Coach is notified & players removed.
This play has a lot to comprehend, but must be correctly ruled and administered. Thanks.
